A weekend in Vienna

WHERE TO STAY, EAT AND VISIT

  • Vienna is very easy to get to, with direct international flights arriving into Vienna International Airport. From the airport, the city centre is only around 25 minutes away by Uber or taxi.

Alternatively, you can take the CAT (City Airport Train), which runs directly into the centre of Vienna and is a quick and easy option if you are travelling light.

  • We would strongly recommend staying in, or as close as possible to, Vienna’s 1st District (Innere Stadt). This is the historic centre of the city and the best base for the weekend festivities, sightseeing, restaurants and bars.

Airbnbs are not especially common in Vienna, but there are plenty of excellent hotel options across all price ranges.

We have secured favourable rates with the following hotels:

    • Leo Grand — 20 rooms available - Quote: “Thame Wedding”

    • Others to be agreed - stay tuned!

  • If you have never been to Vienna before, you may find the number of options slightly overwhelming - there is so much to see in what was once the capital of Europe.

For a long weekend in Vienna, our personal recommendations would be:

    • Upper Belvedere — Home to Klimt’s The Kiss, as well as works by Schiele and other Austrian artists. Definitely pre-book tickets as queues can be very long.

    • Albertina Modern — One of Vienna’s best contemporary art museums in a beautiful central location.

    • Stephansplatz — The iconic heart of Vienna and one of the city’s most famous landmarks.

    • Karlskirche — A baroque church and one of Vienna’s most beautiful buildings.

    • MuseumsQuartier — A huge cultural quarter filled with museums, galleries, cafés, and courtyards.

    • Plankl — If you are inspired by the traditional Austrian attire, then this is the shop to go to.

If you are staying near the 1st District, you can walk almost everywhere. Vienna is an incredibly walkable city, with beautiful streets, cafés, and landmarks around every corner.

The city also has an excellent U-Bahn (metro) system which is clean, safe, and very easy to use.

There is absolutely no need to hire a car or worry about taxis during your stay.

  • If you are extending your stay and looking for some must-eat restaurants, these are some of our favourite spots in Vienna:

    • Plachutta — Traditional Austrian cuisine, famous for tafelspitz and, in our opinion, the best schnitzel in Vienna.

    • Zum Schwarzen Kameel — A Vienna institution. Perfect for anything from a light lunch to a full dinner. Sit outside if you can — reservations are not possible. Great for just drinks as well.

    • Die Feinkosterei (Judenplatz) — Traditional Austrian flavours served tapas-style in a lovely setting.

    • Palmenhaus — European cuisine served inside a beautiful greenhouse next to the Hofburg Palace. Ideal for brunch or lunch.
